£ = Alt+0163

± = Alt+0177
¼ = Alt+0188

Or better yet, a program to remember them for you! http://quickkeydotnet.sourceforge.net/

What will life be like if people stop reading? Have you ever pondered what U-tube and TV are doing to your brain? How has literacy has changed us from story tellers to readers?  Why does TV make us tend to read less? Amazingly, studies have been done and found that our brains change significantly when we become literate and read. Here is an interesting article from the New Yorker that ponders (with studies to back it up) this interesting scenario. It also has some strong evidence to keep the kids on the Internet and off the TV.

Need to kill a few minutes?  Go over to http://www.bored.com/fallingsand/index.html and play in the sand.  At first it doesn't seem like it does much - but check "wax" and "fire" and drag your mouse around - and then add a little "fuse"....it gets quite interesting....

Have a website you'd like to destroy? Now you have your chance.  With this clever game you can erase, drive over, and even blow up any site on the net (not permanently).  It's good to let go of your aggression.... http://bored.com/destroysites/index.php

A place to stay that’s bigger and better than a hotel room
You want to go to Seattle, but getting there is all you can afford. You have a perfectly lovely house in Tucson, and you might never have realized that someone, somewhere, wants to go to Tucson. See where this is going? Register for free for a house- or apartment-swapping Web site like Only In America (http://www.exchangehomesoia.com/), where you post your place and browse everyone else’s. When you see somewhere you’d like to visit, you arrange a trade with the owner, without any cash changing hands.

Samples of newly developed products of all sorts
Some smart and rather kind folks have built an entire site (http://www.thefreesite.com/Free_Samples/) where they aggregate free-sample-offers from across the Internet.  While some of the links are to be avoided, as the sites they send you to ask you to participate in other offers before they’ll send the samples, there are a lot of legitimate, no-strings-attached offers direct from manufacturers, free of any shipping or handling charges, for such items as coffee, diapers, lotions and potions. We suggest creating an e-mail address separate from your primary or work address, just for use on sites like this, in case the manufacturers send you marketing e-mails.

Start-up Savvy - How to have a solid foundation for your web business

1. Know your industry, read everything you can find online and off, talk to people, attend conferences. Find out what people need and how you can provide for those needs online.

2. Network, network, network.  Find solutions for others problems, not just your own.

3. Honesty counts.  Sacrifice your own needs when necessary to further a relationship. Credibility counts.

4. Determine which parts of your business can be handled by others as you grow.  Delegate, let go where you need to.

5. Don't put all your eggs in one basket - if a deal falls though, find others. Online businesses must perpetually reinvent themselves.

6. A static site is good for starters, but expect you'll have to add more interactivity as you are discovered and your client base grows.  Your web professional can give you good ideas about how to grow your online presence over time.

7. Determine how much risk you are willing to tolerate and how much time you can allow for your business to mature. Be willing to try new things and change with the market.

8. Find ways to improve and renew yourself -it will help you see new approaches.  There are many demands on your time, but if you've found something you love, it makes it easier.

Running a successful online business is a task that takes time and energy to make it work.  It's not just a "build it and they will come" scenario.  You will still need to do everything a brick-and-mortar business does (advertise, network, market research) and create a credible, trustworthy image as well, since many of your shoppers will never meet you.
