Why you don't want non-compliant code on your website...

Most web pages are rendered using HTML.  As with any language there are rules/standards that should be followed.  When the rules aren't followed, bad things happen!  Browsers crash, search engines hate you, the site does weird things...standards change all the time, and over time are replaced with new standards.  If your website is a couple of years old, it's probably no longer compliant and needs a facelift!  So what are the costs of non-compliant code?

• Lost sales.  If the page doesn't work, the visitor moves on
• Lost visitors. Pages take too long to load, visitors move on.
• Good code is more efficient so more visitors can be on your site at the same time.
• Search engines do not index  non-compliant pages because the spider can't read it.
• Too many resources to maintain - old code uses more bandwidth so your hosting may go over it's limit.
• Rebuilds are more expensive - basically the site news a new engine - not just some spit and polish!
• You start seeing strange errors, or pages that used to load fine no longer work.
• The design "breaks"...with new, wider monitors, things can spread out too much or overlap.
• It's not accessible - not a problem for most of us, but if you're sight impaired and need a screen reader it matters.
