How You're Paid

1. Pay Per Sale (PPS) - This is the most common type of affiliate program. When promoting programs, products or services on a pay per sale basis, the affiliate only earns money when a sale is made through their affiliate link. Usually the money earned is a percentage of the total sale, and this is called the affiliate commission.

With a Pay Per Sale type of affiliate program, it's important for the affiliate marketer to select programs and products which will sell well in their chosen niche. Otherwise you'll be wasting a lot of time and effort and getting very little in terms of sales results.

In order for sales to be made consistently in a Pay Per Sale program, the products must be very good, the sales letter must be very good, and the merchant must also be very good. Then of course, the affiliate must be able to send enough targeted traffic to those sales pages, so that sales can actually be made.

2. Pay Per Click (PPC) - A pay per click affiliate program usually involves some sort of advertising. Instead of the affiliate marketer recommending specific products and services, they simply put advertisements on their website or in their email newsletters. When visitors or readers click an ad, the affiliate earns a small amount of money.

The most popular PPC affiliate program online today is the Google AdSense program. There are many others though, and each has different criteria for joining, as well as earning money and being paid.

PPC affiliate programs are popular with many affiliate marketers, because they feel like they don't have to actually try and sell anything. Instead, they can provide great content on a blog or website, and the visitors click ads passively.

3. Pay Per Lead (PPL) - Pay Per Lead affiliate programs are popular because an affiliate can make money just by giving away something free. There is no sale involved, and the affiliate referral commissions are often quite lucrative.

With PPL affiliate programs, the affiliate usually just needs to get their visitor to fill out a form requesting more information, or fill out a survey or opinion poll. In some cases, all the affiliate has to do is get the visitors to sign up to an email list, and they'll earn money from these actions.

4. Pay Per Action (PPA) - This term is often used synonymously with either any or all of the above. With a pay per action affiliate program, the affiliate's job is to get their targeted visitors to take a specific action. Sometimes that action is to buy something, sometimes it's just requesting free information. Other times the visitors have to take a survey or sign up for an email list. The types of actions vary from one affiliate program offer to another, but just like the other affiliate payment types above, once the action is performed, the affiliate earns a commission.

The down side of affiliate marketing is your links may be stolen if you do not protect them! There are many methods of protecting link, but most require a minimal amount of programming. One product we've found that improves your click-thru is a link cloaker.  There are several out there, but this is one we recommend and use ourselves:Keep your affiliate links from being stolen.

Earn income from your website with little or no effort

What is affiliate marketing you ask? It's getting free money when someone clicks on a link on your site.  It doesn't cost you anything.   Must be a marketing scam! Actually, affiliate sales can be quite profitable if you are willing to put some work into it.  Some website owners have earned commisisons of thousands per month. Most of us will never reach that level of success with just one or two websites. If you'd like to generate a small income that pays for your hosting say, or your web designer's monthly maintenance bill, it might be worth taking a look at.  Affiliate marketing promotes products your customers might be looking for anyway - and you earn a small commission when they find it on your website.

What affiliate marketing does

Everyone is trying to sell something - a product, a service.  And many are willing to give you a commission just for referring to them.  Commissions vary widely, and can be quite large or very small - depending on the company offering the marketing incentive and what's typical in that industry.  If you are a basket company, you need something to put in the baskets you create, right?  You don't own a gourmet coffee company, a florist and a chocolatier - but those are the things that are used to fill your baskets.  The next best approach is partner with these companies and sell their products for them for a commission.  They fit well with your baskets, and can even increase your basket sales if people know where to go get these things - so you both win.  And all you had to do for this is put a small banner or text link on your website letting people know they exist.  Easy!

What happens next is magic!  One of your basket customers decides she'd like some chocolate to put in the basket she buys from you - so she clicks on the Chocolatier and buys some gourmet chocolates for $20 - cha ching - you just earned an incentive for sending her there. The promoter of the chocolate link tallies up your earnings for the month, and sends you a check (or deposits it directly into your account).  It's that easy.  In a few months you have enough to pay for your hosting, or those web edits you've been longing for, or a Mercedes...it all depends on what and how you are promoting the links.  In the end, should you get near the top of Google and generate a lot of buying traffic you might just get that Mercedes (but no promises here!).

Another plus is a few affiliate links can make a dull, boring site a little more active and interactive.  Many banners can be color coordinated or chosen by size. An Affiliate manager such as Commission Junction, ClixGalore, or Shareasale along with our expert managers take care of everything.  You just have to instruct your web developer which promotions  you prefer and the type of banners you'd like added.  We can even manage your campaigns for you - taking care of ending promotions and adding new ones as they become available.

Another type of generalized advertising is Google's adsense.  They aren't the only ones promoting link advertising, Miva is another provider of this service, but Google is the best known.  What adsense does is put a strip of link (or video) ads on your site promoting paid links based on the content in your site.  It's even easier than affiliate advertising because you don't have to choose the links - they choose them for you.  You can screen out competitors to some extent, but generally they change constantly and are based on the content you already have on your site.  You'll see these everywhere:

Every page view, every click (whether someone purchases anything or not) earns you income- and if your site is quite popular, it can earn you more than a few cents. This is called Pay per click.  If Google doesn't have anything pertinent to your content, it can run public service ads until something becomes available.  So you are a good samitarian too...nothing wrong with that!

Easy, pain free, and potentially very profitable for your website.  You no longer have to think of your website as a drain on your advertising budget.  Instead it becomes another stream of income for your company.

PPC (Pay per Click) Advertising Programs

With carefully placed advertising provided through Google, MSN and others you can almost make your site pay for itself!  By exchanging banners or exchanging advertising you can target your traffic.  A targeted search beyond standard search engine submissions (commonly called Pay-per-Click) can make the most of your advertising dollar. A bonus is your site gets automatically indexed and ranked better by the major search engines you advertise with.

Let us set up a PPC program for you today!

  • We'll refine your targeting preventing specific websites from showing your ads.
  • We'll preventing specific Internet Protocol (IP) addresses from seeing your ads.
  • We'll estimate in advance how specific keywords may perform for you.
  • We'll help you create multi-media ads.
  • We'll find effective words and phrases for your ads so your market is targeted properly and efficiently.
  • We'll do it on a budget you can afford!

Pay Per Click

Here are a few pay per click providers that you should take note of:

  • Yahoo! Search Marketing
  • MSN adCenter
  • ABC Search
  • 7Search
  • Miva
  • SearchFeed
  • Facebook
  • StumbleUpon
  • Search 123

Some of these are pretty small pay per click companies, but they offer excellent opportunities for reaching your target market for much less than you will at Google AdWords. In fact, our recommended approach is to start with Google AdWords then use the smaller PPC search engines to augment your advertising. It works.

Pay Per Impression

Pay per impression programs pay you every time an ad is viewed on your website.
